Chris Johnson, PhD (ChrisJohnson@PilotTrainingSystems.com)

Chris Johnson is an Air Force veteran and Instructor Pilot with a PhD in engineering. He moved to Madison in 2009 to build a new Flight Simulation Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin that he now manages as a research fellow. He developed a concept for advanced weather simulation that he's been working on for about 5 years. Chris has tested the system on pilots at UW and at the University of Illinois where he also attended graduate school and taught student pilots.

High-Fidelity Weather Simulation

Pilot Training System is proof-of-concept software system featuring advanced weather simulation algorithms that improve flight safety by using archived weather data to drive existing simulation software to improve simulation fidelity and its training utility. The algorithms simulate dynamic weather and the weather-reporting infrastructure that aeronautical professionals utilize to make safe decisions. The technology trains flight crews to make smarter weather-related decisions by safely recreating hazardous weather scenarios using simulation, and the high-fidelity weather simulation is the first of its kind to simulate authentic weather patterns and the corresponding weather reports to produce simulation training that effectively supports pilots' concurrent roles as amateur meteorologists.

1-UP: My Programming Knowledge Quest

People in the tech community must continually adapt to the changing industry, so let's foster more teaching between peers.  As we learn new programs, languages, etc., we can try to teach others as we go, thereby re-enforcing our own learning.   In one year, we can learn so much, especially when working on problems together.  Joe will share his own structured one-year program as an example and inspiration; all while encourage others to set learning goals for themselves.

How To Play Golf And Not Look Like A Fool!

Guidelines for beginners and casual golfers how to play golf in a way that fosters respect no matter how badly you score.  The main concept applies to any sporting or social activity that you might not be good at but want to participate for networking, business, or recreational purposes. You can handle yourself well and be respected by good players regardless how you score in golf or any other sport.  It is the non-technical, non-scoring parts of the game that foster respect and good relationships.

Ranging from the ever expanding universe to mermaids to money in business and why people act the way they do. It should be rather funny due to some of the obscure thoughts that have cropped up over the years!
